Poland's economy is currently undergoing transition, which has been clear for some time already. By investing in its development Poland joins the global trend of building a low-emission economy in a most reasonable and balanced way, also in order to eliminate the remaining obstacles to development between Poland and the richer EU countries while raising the living standards of the citizens. Therefore, the public discussion on the possible solutions should take into account the environmental, economic, and social aspects.

The Ministry of Development led by Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has drafted a strategic document entitled "Strategy for Responsible Development". It clearly indicates the need for immediate action in many areas of the Polish economy. According to the document, Poland’s main challenges in the energy sector include: securing stable supplies of energy at the lowest possible prices; energy efficiency; compliance with the EU requirements in the field of combating climate change; and the transition to a low-emission economy. The vision of the new model of development provides for: modernization and extension of power transmission grids and gas storage facilities; investments in the conventional power sector; wider use of stable renewable energy sources; introduction of nuclear power; and support to the development of low-emission public transport.

In this important discussion, attention should be paid to the rapidly developing trend of building a closed circle economy with its basic message that waste is not a problem but a valuable resource.

As an introduction and identification of the areas for in-depth discussion, the recommendations of the two conferences on the subject, held in October and November, will be used. They will be supplemented by the young generation’s opinions presented in an earlier conference for students.

To achieve the aforementioned goals and climate policy targets, new ideas and resources are needed. Therefore, this year's Power Ring conference will discuss the necessary investments, the effectiveness of their implementation, the technologies to support development and innovation in the energy sector and other sectors, taking account of the possible funding sources and opportunities for effective implementation of relevant projects. The discussion will focus on the following issues:

  1. The role and place of energy in sustainable development
  2. Poland’s integrated plans for the energy and climate sector until 2030 and until 2050
  3. The closed circle economy: a solution that is, in principle, faultless but difficult to fully implement
