A but maybe H?
- prospects for nuclear energy in Poland in light of European experiences

 27.05.2009, 11:00 a.m. - Polish Press Agency (PAP), ul. Bracka 6/8, Warsaw

The media is always attempting to excite the public's attention by reporting on new plans for construction of nuclear power plants in Poland. More and more companies are also contemplating investing in this specific type of energy. And they are right in doing so, as the experiences of our European neighbours show that it is worth it.

In Europe, France is the leader in terms of the number of active nuclear reactors it possesses (59); second place is held by Great Britain (19). There are nuclear power plants in almost all of the countries neighbouring on Poland: Germany (17), the Czech Republic (6), Slovakia (5), Ukraine (15), Lithuania (1) and Russia (35). By means of showing nuclear energy solutions adopted in other European countries, we would like to facilitate examination of the prospects for economic growth that nuclear energy will allow for in Poland.

Representatives of firms and institutions responsible for the functioning of nuclear power plants in neighbouring countries will present data connected with their construction and operation. They will also report on how the development of nuclear energy affected the local economy and how it influences energy prices in a given country. This last aspect, in particular, can prove critical for new investors when they are faced with important decisions in this respect, especially in light of the current state of the energy balance of our country.

We know that investments into construction of nuclear power stations often requires acceptance on the part of society, which is why we have decided to also discuss selected nuances of atomic and thermonuclear technologies, which will be presented by experts in these fields, and to present the results of research from the reports of Polish and European agenda. Thereby, we would like to initiate a discussion as to the security and chances arising out of the development of nuclear energy in Poland.

The following issues will be touched upon during the debate:

  • Atomic and nuclear technologies;
  • Technologies of the future: ITER-TOKAMAK, polywell technologies, Hyper laser systems;
  • Support and opposition in respect of atomic energy - Poland and Europe;
  • Poland's energy policy for the years up to 2030 - about the energy balance of the country and investments into nuclear power plants as strategic investments for closure of this balance;
  • European leaders of nuclear power - presentation of solutions implemented in countries that border on Poland;
  • Atom - is it worth it? -  a discussion panel comprised of the presidents of Polish and European energy companies: energy prices in Poland and Europe, the energy security of the country, the feasibility of investments in nuclear energy from a business standpoint and from the point of view of society (new jobs and chances for economic development of the country).

Experts invited to take part in the discussion include:
  • Zbigniew Kamienski, Director of Nuclear Energy Department, Ministry of Economy
  • Henryk Majchrzak, Director of Energy Department, Ministry of Economy
  • PhD Stanislaw Latek, National Atomic Energy Agency
  • PhD Andrzej Strupczewski, Institute of Atomic Energy
  • PhD Ludwik Pienkowski, Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw
  • experts from the Polish Nucleon Society
  • representatives of the European Commission (Derek Taylor, Adviser of EC, DG TREN)
  • representatives of governments, presidents and directors of companies from the nuclear energy sector and institutions active in: France (PhD Marc Bondiou, Science and Technology Attaché, Embassy of France), Finland (Peter Tuominen, Development and Communications Manager, Fortum Finland), Germany (PhD Holger Tietze-Jaensch, Institute for Safety Research and Reaktor Technology, Dept. for Nuclear Waste Menagement, Head of Product Control Office for Reprocessed Waste) and Sweden (Gunnar Haglund, Counsellor, Embassy of Sweden).
The debate will be chaired by Mrs Marina Coey, President of the Board, Procesy Inwestycyjne
Sp. z o.o.
