Transformation of the country’s economy towards a low-emission one is among the greatest economic and environmental challenges facing Poland as a member state of the European Union. The targets set for the country provide a true opportunity and motivation for further development of new technologies; yet there are also a number of risks. Therefore, in order to make the change successful, the planning stage needs to take account of the evolving global context, and implemented actions need to be adjusted to the social and economic realities of the state. The desirable results of the low-emission transformation, apart from the obvious benefits for the environment, include greater economic stability, increased competitiveness at the international level and raised standard of living of the citizens.

The transformation is necessary and cannot be avoided. In the XXI century, changes take place rapidly. Every day brings new ways of thinking about the energy sector. Increasing attention is paid, for example, to prosumer installations with capacities up to 40 kW, developing in rural areas and small towns. The above-mentioned objectives can be achieved e.g. through focusing on innovations and adjusting them to the existing system. However, to make such new solutions a driver of development, and not a burden, they have to be competitive in terms of cost and reliability, compared to already established technologies.

This is not the end of the challenges. The low-emission transformation requires a system which is able to combine the operation of energy generating sources which significantly differ from each other, for example traditional power plants and renewable energy sources. Therefore, it is necessary to build smart grids managed in a smart way. Our country needs innovation, also in the energy-related infrastructure. It also needs capital, primarily long-term capital, as well as legislation which is favourable for business.

The discussion will seek to answer the question about the future direction of technological development of the Polish energy sector and about methods making it possible to avoid the related risks. The issues to be discussed by the participants will include:

  1. Emission reduction – a burden or an opportunity for the economy
  2. Low-emission technologies - a huge challenge for innovation
  3. Obstacles to the practical implementation of the low-emission transformation
